Mindfulness is as effective as medication to decrease anxiety

Susan West

A recent clinical trial(1) compared the effectiveness of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and a first-line SSRI medication (Esciltalopram) to treat anxiety. Both treatments were effective; anxiety levels decreased in both groups. The MBSR group outcomes were comparable to the medication group outcomes. Also notable, no patients in the MBSR group dropped out of the study due to adverse reactions. In the medication group, 8% of patients dropped out.

This is NOT a suggestion to abandon or reject medication. A clinician should evaluate, prescribe and monitor the best treatments.

This finding IS, however, testament to the power of a robust mindfulness practice.
